12th Jeevika: Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival: Understanding Livelihood through Films

12th Jeevika: Asia Livelihood Documentary Festival held from 30 October – 1 November 2015 at Siri Fort Auditorium, Siri Fort Road, New Delhi.

Organised by India’s leading think tank; Centre for Civil Society (CCS). Jeevika is a unique documentary festival, capturing livelihood challenges faced by the rural and urban poor.

In order to identify and bring to light policies and social, religious and cultural practices which prevent people from earning an honest living and being an entrepreneur. The festival aims to highlight the policy challenges of Entrepreneurs in the micro, small, medium and large enterprise & Education Entrepreneurs whose livelihood is connected to schools.

The festival received a total of 115 documentaries from across the world including 16 International Productions and 7 select student documentaries. This time Jeevika witnessed total screening of 26 documentaries (19 Jeevika selections, 1 EduDoc & 6 Curated Documentaries through Al Jazeera (Witness & Viewfinder).

CCS this time also launched a new initiative under Jeevika named as “EduDoc| Stories of Edupreneurs”.

EduDoc is an International short film competition an attempt to highlight the stories of Education entrepreneurs. This time EduDoc received total of 22 entries out of which one selected documentary was screened at the Festival.

These screenings were followed by the panel discussions every day:

  1. Panel I, 30 October 2015on ‘Law, Liberty & Livelihood’ followed by the screening of a documentary ‘India Awakes’. In association with Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) & Liberty Institute. The panel consisted of individuals whose success stories were featured in the documentary: Banwari Lal Sharma -- President of a street vendors association in Jaipur, Rama Bhai Vasava -- a Sagai village leader who champions protection of indigenous people's land rights, and Mannem Madhusudan Rao -- a millionaire who was born into a lower rung of society (Dalit) and relied on his hard work and perseverance to defy societal limitations and succeed as an entrepreneur. The panel discussion was lead by Amit Chandra and Ambrish Mehta and moderated by Mohit Satyanand.
  2. Panel II, 31 October 2015 on 'Clean India, Clean Statutes': The discourse centered around the report by Centre for Civil Society, which had recommended 25 laws for repeal to the Delhi Government. Panelists included Shailaja Chandra -- policy analyst and former Chief Secretary of Government of Delhi, Shubho Roy of National Institute for Public Finance and Policy, Raqhav Chadha -- spokesperson for Aam Aadmi Party, and Vikramjit Banerjee -- a Supreme Court of India advocate.
  3. Panel III, 1 November 2015:  Jeevika festival closed with panel III titled 'Ease of Doing Business: Lift Licenses, Lift Lives'. Panelists included Gopal Krishna Agarwal -- national Spokesperson on economic affairs at BJP, Anil Khaitan -- Chairman of SNK Corp., and Sowmya Rao -- a lawyer and Partner at Mudita Advisory. The panel was introduced by CCS President Parth J. Shah and moderated by Seetha Parthasarathy.

A dedicated website on Ease of doing business (EoDB) was also launched during the festival.
