On 19 February 2015, Mrinalini Sapra will be at CCS to provide an overview of how to interpret and analyse the upcoming Union Budget. Mrinalini is a 2004 batch Indian Revenue Services Officer presently posted as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (APA) in International Taxation Directorate, New Delhi. She completed her Bachelor’s in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University and went on to do a MSc in Economics at Warwick University UK. She has also recently completed Masters in Public Administration from National University of Singapore in 2014.

Shreekant Gupta will explore free-market solutions to environmental challenges, on 3 February 2015. Dr Gupta is Associate Professor at the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore (NUS). His research interests are in applied economics and policy including environment and development and climate change. Earlier, he has been a Fellow with National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), New Delhi and headed the Environmental Policy Cell. He has also worked as an environmental economist at the World Bank at Washington DC focusing on macroeconomic policies and the environment in Sri Lanka, Ghana and Poland. Shreekant has served on several national and international committees on the environment including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 to which his contribution was recognised.

CCS is hosting Cris Lingle on 19 January 2015 to discuss sound money and how we can restore it, with a focus on the Indian context.  Cris is Visiting Professor of Economics at Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala, Adjunct Scholar at the Centre for Independent Studies (Sydney), Research Scholar at the Centre for Civil Society (New Delhi), and Member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Globalization Institute (Brussels). His research interests are in the areas of Political Economy and International Economics that focuses on emerging market economies and public policy reform. He is widely credited with anticipating the turmoil in the East Asian economies that began in 1997 (The Rise and Decline of the ‘Asian Century’: False Starts on the Road to the ‘Global Millennium’).  Join us for this important discussion! Centre for Civil Society is hosting an informal dialogue with Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) to discuss new policy idea and options to introduce greater choice for parents and students in the education sector.

Ensuring the availability of good quality education in India is one of the key challenges faced by our elementary and higher education systems today. Many new developments and thoughts are emerging today, that have the potential to have a long-lasting positive impact on the education system as a whole.

Through this event we aim to engage with policymakers on the concept of Choice in Education, and share some models built around this theme, which have been adopted in various forms in different countries. We believe that through constructive dialogue and knowledge sharing, we can together solve some of the most pertinent and difficult issues facing the education sector in India.

Shri Gurcharan Das is an author, consultant and public intellectual, and writes regular columns for the Times of India and Dainik Bhaskar (and guest columns for The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Afairs, Time and Newsweek). His international bestseller, India Unbound, has been published in many countries and languages, and also been filmed by the BBC. He is currently a trustee with Centre for Civil Society.

CCS is partnering with South Asia Bamboo Foundation (SABF) with support from Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) and Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) plans to organise a workshop for policy makers, officials engaged in implementing of bamboo schemes including the provisions of Forest Rights Act 2006 and other schemes of Government of India where bamboo can play a predominant role.The workshop is a day long programme for selected government officials, NGO workers and professionals working in the bamboo sector. It aims to enable participants on understanding core issues regarding bamboo market in India, method and ways to deal with identified challenges to unleash potential of bamboo as resource. We will cover topics such as enabling bamboo enterprises, bamboo for social sector and livelihood development, Institutional mechanism, Experiences from other similar sector through thematic sessions.
