Labour Reforms in India: Align, incentivise, and create trust

A wide range of analytical view shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Government is working on an outcome-based approach towards labour reforms.

One argument says that labour laws and reforms need to be aligned with a country’s level of economic development and India’s often were not.

India’s total labour force in 2011-2012 was estimated to be about 480 million, only about 40 per cent of the total population. Reforming labour laws to bring about better working conditions, market friendly norms and social security is the call of the hour.

Amit Chandra, Senior Manager of Centre of Civil Society Academy argues that Government should ensure that all norms in the labour industry should be aligned with interest and incentives.

He adds for better labour reforms in India, the Government should move from intention based policymaking to evidence based policies. Also, alignment is necessary with added trust in the market forces that will enable efficient labour reforms.
